Congratulations to our newly-elected Pope Francis. The first modern-day Pope born outside of Europe, the first Jesuit, and the first to be named after Saint Francis, Pope Francis has been very supportive of the Eastern Catholic Churches in Latin America during his tenure as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in his native Argentina. For this, we are especially thankful.

This week, we are passing a significant moment. When we remember Church events in the past, we always say that they took place when John XXIII, Paul VI or John Paul II was Pope. Their personalities and leadership set the context of when the event occurred. During his time, Benedict XVI continued the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and offered clear direction for the future. He now will join the ranks of his predecessors in how we remember his place in Church history.

As the affected communities and individuals begin to rebuild their cities and their lives, we join with them in prayer and offer our total support to their efforts.
